When John Haydn Anstee (a.k.a Anstey) was born in December 1919, his father, Edward, was 39 and his mother, Margaret, was 37. He had three brothers and three sisters. He died on 3 November 1944, when he was 24 years old, and was burried on land near the crossroads Zonnelandstraat and Oude Turfvaartsestraat in Nispen. After the war his body was exhumed and reburied at the Bergen-op-Zoom English War Cemetery, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.
Haydn survived Dunkirk came home on leave and later returned to join his regiment at the South Wales Borderers. At Nispen the 2nd South Wales Borderers lifted many mines, many of these mines were 'R' mines capable of breaking a tank track, but sensitive enough to be set off by the weight of a soldier's foot. The 2nd South Wales Borderers were clearing at Nispen one of the biggest minefields they had met since Granville (July 1944). Unfortunatly private John Haydn Anstee lost his life whilst clearing a mine (source Hist 56 Bde.).
Interesting to note on the temporary war memorial in Nispen, the death date was mentioned as 2 November 1944. Also the grave concentration report originally quoted a death date of 2 November 1944. However in red marker the death date was changed from 2 into 3rd of November. His final headstone now reads 3rd of November as official death date. The sign seems to read P.T., and was originally P.T.E., due to age of the sign the "E" is missing.
Interesting to note on the CWGC site and the headstone his age is mentioned as 26 years old, whilst according to ancestry records he was born in December 1919 and therefore probably 24 years old.
