Bert Midlane died on 26 October 1944 in Nispen, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands, when he was just 21 years old. His tank was hit close to “Brembosch” by a self-propelled grenade at the crossroads Rietgoorsestraat - Bergsebaan – Haiinkstraat. Major Davies the commander of B squadron 107th Regiment (King's own) was wounded together with 2 members of his tank crew. Bert Midlane was a navigator.
As trooper Midlane was one of the first victims to fall during the liberation of Nispen, his name was put on the Memoriam board. Trooper Midlane was first buried in a field grave in the front garden of a house at Hollands Diep and then reburied in the cemetery of Bergen op Zoom.
When Bert Midlane was born in July 1923 in London, London, his father, Arthur, was 44 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 39. He had four brothers and one sister. His brother Arthur James died in July 1940 in Essex when Bert was 17 years old.
Interesting to note on the temporary war memorial in Nispen, the name was mentioned as Midland by error. Bert his brother Ron was a tank driver in the same regiment, and had seen Bert after he had passed. He said there wasn’t a mark on him. Ron was involved in the liberation of several towns and villages, and went on to Arnhem, through to Belsen and ended up in Munster before being demobilised.
