BERGEN-OP-ZOOM WAR CEMETERY 7. C. 16.
When Ronald Archer MacKenna was born on 6 August 1918 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, his father, David, was 33 and his mother, Mary, was 35. He had one sister. He died on 26 or 27 October 1944, when he was 26 years old, and was burried on land 100 yards west from the railroadcrossing at Grensstraat in Nispen. After the war his body was exhumed and reburied at the Bergen-op-Zoom English War Cemetery, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.
Ronald was most likely killed in action by a German bullet, whilst the unit were trying to remove a concrete tank wall near the tankditch (Rissebeek) at the Westelaarsestraat. There is doubt however about the date he was killed in action and or if these where the exact circumstances. Based on interpretation confirmed by local experts, most likely 27/10 he was killed in action and probably CGWG and tombstone indicate a wrong date. Please note this is based on an assumption..
Ronald was the first husband of Valerie Yvonne Cox. They married in 1943, he died 1944. They had a son Ronald David MacKenna born in 1945 who died in 1947.
Ronald was mentioned as the 5th name on the memorial sign.
