BERGEN-OP-ZOOM WAR CEMETERY 7. C. 21.
When Alfred James Murrell was born in 1923 in Ipswich, Suffolk, his father, Walter, was 28 and his mother, Ellen, was 27. He had two sisters.
He died in the morning of 28 October near Oostlaar during the battle to liberate Wouw. He fell together with Arthur Wright, Stanley Hurst and Charles Price, all troopers from the B Squadron 49th Reconnaissance Regiment. Luitenenant S. Probert was evecuated with wounds during that fight.
He was burried on land 100 yards west from the railroadcrossing at Grensstraat in Nispen. After the war his body was exhumed and reburied at the Bergen-op-Zoom English War Cemetery, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands. The following anecdote was received from Nigel Klammer (Alfred James Murrell was his uncle): the info my mother passed down was that alfie and a mate were crawling up to take out a machine gun nest when that were both taken out by that nest, unsure if that is true or not.
